Abstract

Adenomyosis is a benign condition that belongs to a group of estrogen-dependent disorders associated with significant clinical consequences: dysmenorrhea, menorrhagia, and infertility. Recent data concerning the pathogenesis of adenomyosis call for a change in the perspective regarding this disorder and its relationship to the various clinical presentations. The role of surgery is also a matter of debate. At present, surgery is considered an option for certain forms of adenomyomas, respectively for adenomyomatous polyps.
