This review article examines the regulatory effects of traditional Chinese medicine on vascular endothelial growth factor, a key mediator of physiological angiogenesis and various pathological processes. It synthesizes recent research demonstrating that numerous Chinese herbal formulations and individual compounds can modulate VEGF expression and activity, thereby influencing vascular formation in contexts ranging from wound healing to cancer metastasis. The authors conclude that these findings highlight the potential of TCM as a complementary therapeutic strategy for conditions involving abnormal angiogenesis, while noting that mechanistic exploration remains in its early stages. Relevance to endometriosis: VEGF is explicitly cited as a critical factor in endometriosis pathophysiology within the references (Donnez et al., 1998), linking this general review of VEGF modulation to the disease context.

Abstract

Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is the main regulator of physiological angiogenesis during embryonic development, bone growth, and reproductive function, and it also participates in a series of pathological changes. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with a history of more than 2000 years, has been widely used in clinical practice, while the exploration of its mechanisms has only begun. This review summarizes the research of recent years on the influence of TCM on VEGF. It is found that many Chinese medicines and recipes have a regulatory effect on VEGF, indicating that Chinese medicine has broad prospects as a complementary and alternative therapy, providing new treatment ideas for clinical applications and the theoretical basis for research on the mechanisms of TCM.

Text is read by the "Ask this paper" AI Q&A widget below. Extraction quality varies by source — PMC NXML preserves structure cleanly, OA-HTML may include some navigation residue, and OA-PDF can have broken hyphenation. The publisher copy (via DOI) is the canonical version.

My notes (saved in your browser only)

Ask this paper AI returns verbatim quotes from the full text · source: oa-doi-fallback

Answers must be backed by verbatim quotes from this paper's full text. Hallucinated quotes are dropped automatically; if no verbatim passage answers the question, we say so. How this works
