Endometriosis in adolescent: analysis of 4 cases

Objective To analysis the etiology, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment of adolescent endometriosis. Methods Four cases of adolescent with endometriosis (14～20 years old) treated in Peking University People's Hospital were reviewed. Results The frequency of adolescent endometriosis was about 2% (4/202). The chief symptoms leading to diagnosis were dysmenorrhea, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic mass and acute abdominal pain. Ovary was the most affected organ. Two patients had complicated genital tract anomalies. Conservative surgical therapies were performed in all patients, and medical therapies were followed for the advanced patients. Conclusions The main symptoms of adolescent endometriosis may not be typical, endometriosis should be strongly suspected in adolescent with chronic pelvic pain especially with no response to oral contraceptives and nonsteriodal anti-inflammatory medicine. The treatment of adolescent endometriosis can be conservative operation combined with medical therapy.
