Abstract

Objective: The Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome (HWWS) is an anomalous formation of the genitourinary tract originating in the mullerian ducts. Its early diagnosis can prevent several medical complications that invariably happen during adolescence. Based on three cases without diagnosis but already presenting clinical symptoms due to the delay in the recognition of the syndrome admitted to Nucleo de Estudos da Saude do Adolescente of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (NESA/UERJ) in the last twelve months, the authors make a review of the illness and stress the necessity of doctors becoming familiar with the disease, thus enabling its early diagnosis and the reduction of future risks. Description: We report three cases not previously identified, proceeding from three distinct pediatrics services, presented to NESA for diagnostic inquiry and treatment. All three patients presented pyohematocolpos as complication. Comments: A rare disease, when not identified in the early stages HWWS can represent a great risk of acute complications, such as the pyohematocolpos presented in the three reported cases, pyosalpinx or pelviperitonitis, as well as long term complications, such as endometriosis, pelvic adhesions and increased risk of abortion or infertility.
