Abstract

Faster lithium-ion battery (LIB) charging is one of the factors that have increased public acceptance of electric vehicles (EVs), yet high-rate charging can cause permanent LIB system deterioration and safety issues, even if it is within physical limitations. Motivated by this, this study proposes a novel approach for achieving optimal fast charging of batteries by utilizing a drone squadron optimization (DSO) technique. The technique considers various factors, including battery capacity, temperature, voltage, and state-of-charge (SOC) to optimize the charging process. The proposed approach uses a hierarchical control framework that optimizes the charging schedule and considers the charging capabilities of individual batteries and the overall system constraints. Simulations were conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique, and the results demonstrated that it can significantly reduce the charging time of batteries while improving their overall efficiency. The technique also ensures that the charging process is conducted within the recommended temperature and voltage ranges to avoid damage to the battery. The proposed DSO technique can be useful in various applications that rely on battery-powered devices, where fast charging times are essential for operational efficiency.
