Abstract

We studied historical and clinical risk factors for osteoporosis and bone mineral density (BMD) in 104 post-menopausal women suffering from backache. BMD was determined by double-energetic X-ray absorptionmetry (DEXA) (Lunar Prodigy instrument). Among the women in the study 57.4% had osteopenia, 26.9% had osteoporosis and 15.7 % had severe osteoporosis. Results showed that symptoms of backache were more often found in patients with low values of BMD T-score. There was also a direct correlation between BMD, body weight and menopause duration. Women with a history of bilateral ovariectomy showed significantly lower T-scores than those who had intact ovaries or unilateral ovariectomy. The presence of these factors (historical and clinical) in patients puts them in a high risk group for the development of osteoporosis. Recognition of this is important for the early diagnosis and treatment of the condition in this group
