This paper describes urinary bladder endometriosis, drawing on two histopathologically characterized cases and a literature review. It notes that urinary involvement occurs in roughly every seventh or eighth case of endometriosis, but bladder endometriosis is rarely recognized because its symptoms are nonspecific and can mimic neoplastic disease. The authors emphasize that prior gynecological or abdominal surgical procedures are common in patients, suggesting endometriosis may have practical diagnostic significance in urology, while cautioning that if it is not considered, misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment may result. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically endometriosis of the urinary bladder and its recognition in urologic practice.

Abstract

Although every seventh or eighth case of endometriosis is found to have urinary involvement, this type of endometriosis is still rarely recognized. The symptoms are not specific and are frequently suggestive of a neoplastic process. On the basis of our two cases of histopathologically two types of endometriosis as well as literature review the practical significance of endometriosis in urology is described. In each patient who previously underwent a gynaecological or surgical procedure in the abdominal cavity, endometriosis of the bladder is likely to occur. This possibility should not be ruled out, otherwise it could lead to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. Similar content being viewed by others
