Abstract

Condoms vasectomies and coitus interruptus are widely used by men but all have serious drawbacks. Vasectomies are generally irreversible; and condoms and withdrawal are said to reduce male sexual pleasure. Danazol has shown promise as a male contraceptive. It has proven itself to be effective in decreasing sperm morphology and motility and it appears to be reversible. The experiences of 60 men who received 600-800 mg danazol daily in combination with 200 mg of testosterone enanthate monthly for about 13 months were analyzed to determine the effects of the drug on sexual functioning. Questionnaires were given to the men covering specific sexual behaviors and feelings and any sexual problems that were experienced. An analysis of questionnaire results yields a tentative conclusion that danazol has no effect on male sexual functioning. Questionnaire responses were essentially the same prior to and during the danazol trials. During danazol trials respondents reported very low frequencies of impotence or problems sustaining penile erections. 71% of respondents never reported instances of impotence. And 64% never reported instances of partner dissatisfaction.
