Abstract

Abstract To compile a physico-mathematical model of a coal seam in order to select the optimal parameters for coal mining of various degrees of metamorphism with a high gas content, under conditions of natural stress-strain state, it is necessary to study in detail the physical properties of coals, taking into account the influence of their surface layer, which provides a nanostructure. Important characteristics of the coal seam that influence gas-dynamic phenomena include: theoretical strength of coals, gas diffusion, filtration properties of the coal seam, the nature of changes in the gas content of the coal seam with depth, spontaneous combustion of coals and coal dust, humidity of coals. It is shown that the thickness of the surface layer is determined by the molar volume and density of the carbon substance. Regular relationships of the thickness of the surface layer have been established: the degree of metamorphism; methane diffusion; heat capacity; accumulation of methane in the crushed coal mass near tectonic disturbances; with fire hazard and gas content of coals. With an increase in the degree of coal metamorphism, the thickness of the surface layer decreases from 214.2 nm (brown coals to 151.5 nm (anthracites), while the surface energy of the layer increases from 1178 to 1667 mJ/m 2 , the theoretical strength increases from 117.8 to 166.7 gPa, and the heat capacity of coal decreases. A comprehensive analysis of these factors makes it possible to assess the effect of changes in the physical properties of coal on the thickness of the surface layer. The practical conclusions of the research results are the use of established patterns to develop measures to improve the efficiency of coal seam degassing; to prevent spontaneous combustion of coals; forecast of gas-dynamic phenomena.
