Abstract
To evaluate by ultrasonography the presence of uterine adenomyosis using the pathologic result as the reference of standard. Since January 2006 to December 2007, 572 patients were surgically treated for benign uterine pathologies, including adenomyosis, with histopathologic confirmation. Ultrasonographyc studies of these patients were retrospectively reviewed in order to verify the diagnosis of adenomyosis. The histological findings revealed the presence of uterine adenomyosis in 136 patients of 572 studied women. In 29 (13.2%) cases of 136 ultrasonography showed the presence of adenomyosis whereas in 107 (86.8%) cases adenomyosis was not detected. Regarding the evidence in the literature of ultrasonographic signs specific for adenomyosis, the diagnosis by this technique is underestimated probably due to the subtle sonographic signs. We suggest that should be important paying attention to these signs for a correct diagnosis.
