Abstract

SummaryHysterectomy has been reported to be responsible for a variety of micturition disorders. This study evaluates the early effects of abdominal hysterectomy and vaginal hysterectomy without repair, on bladder function and symptomatology.Forty patients who underwent hysterectomy (20 vaginal and 20 abdominal) were evaluated with urodynamic studies before surgery, then again at 3 days and at 2 weeks after operation. Bladder symptom histories were taken before all urodynamic studies, as well as at 4 weeks and 4 months after surgery. Six patients with symptoms at 4 weeks after operation underwent a fourth urodynamic evaluation.Temporary, for the most part asymptomatic, lower urinary tract dysfunction was present after both vaginal and abdominal procedures. Asymptomatic voiding defects were more common after vaginal hysterectomy. Transient bladder symptoms, including increased frequency, urgency and dysuria, were more common after abdominal hysterectomy and were generally not related to urodynamic abnormalities. The 4 month survey suggested that neither vaginal nor abdominal hysterectomy appears to be associated with continuing bladder problems.
