Abstract

Special Relativity Theory (SRT) is mathematically consistent, yet conceptual confusion often arises in its interpretation. The reciprocity in the concepts of length contraction and time dilation between two reference frames combined with the conventional distant clock synchronisation has often led to long debates. The Lorentz transformation specifies how the proper length and proper time of one reference frame transform to another reference frame. The convention for synchronising spatially separated clocks plays an important role. This paper presents a systematic operational analysis of the Lorentz transformation by examining the partial derivatives of the spacetime variables under explicitly stated constraints. We show that different relativistic effects correspond to distinct experimental protocols. The role of proper quantities is highlighted and a deeper understanding of the nuances of the theory is achieved.
