Abstract
Language sciences (and cognitive sciences more generally) need to properly embrace one core feature of human language: variability. In this paper we build on findings about the diversity of language functions, typological differences between languages, and sociolinguistic phenomena to sketch the prolegomena of a cognitive science of variation in language.
