Relationship Functioning in Individuals Living with Endometriosis

other OA: green CC0

Abstract

Estimated to occur in 1 in 9 individuals assigned female at birth, endometriosis is a chronic gynaecological condition that significantly impacts physical, psychological, and social functioning. Psychological impacts include high prevalence of depression and anxiety, body image disturbance and sexual distress. The combination of the impact of symptoms and the need to cope with these symptoms can compromise relationships, both romantic and social. This may lead to feelings of social isolation and the need to socially withdraw, which may further exacerbate the adverse impact of endometriosis on interpersonal relationships. This study aims to investigate potential factors associated with diminished relationship functioning of individuals living with endometriosis. Specifically, we will investigate the association of sexual distress, communication avoidance and relationship satisfaction, as well as body image, anticipated stigma, and loneliness.
