Exploratory Study of Serum Lactoferrin and Anti-Lactoferrin Antibody Concentrations in Patients with Endometriosis
This study found significantly higher serum lactoferrin and anti-lactoferrin antibody levels in endometriosis patients, with anti-lactoferrin antibodies decreasing after surgery.

This exploratory study measured serum lactoferrin and anti-lactoferrin (perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody) levels in patients with versus without endometriosis to investigate potential autoimmune-related pathology. The authors found significantly higher serum lactoferrin and anti-lactoferrin antibody levels in the endometriosis group, and reported that serum anti-lactoferrin antibody levels decreased after surgical endometriosis resection. Receiver operating characteristic analyses were used to establish reference values for both markers, and cases exceeding the anti-lactoferrin antibody reference value comprised more than 40% of the endometriosis group, at a rate comparable to autoimmune diseases. The paper notes that future work is needed to precisely elucidate the mechanism behind the appearance of lactoferrin and anti-lactoferrin antibodies in endometriosis. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it examines serum lactoferrin and anti-lactoferrin antibodies as biomarkers and potential contributors to endometriosis pathology.
