This preprint studied how to model a twin-tunnel with a cross-passage using 2D finite-element analysis in PLAXIS V22 FEA, applied as a case study of an Algerian freeway tunnel in Jijel (Texanna province). The authors validated simulated vertical displacements by first matching the tunnels’ response against on-site monitoring using rock-support interaction, then comparing numerical vertical displacements for the right tunnel after excavation of the cross-passage to the corresponding field measurements. They further compared cross-passage displacement outputs from a simplified 2D approach versus a separately modelled cross-passage scenario. The main limitation explicitly reflected in the study’s framing is that the engineering problem is typically 3D, even though the paper reports that 2D results correlate convincingly with monitoring; it was included in the corpus via a keyword match and does not explicitly discuss endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to provide a 2D numerical modelling of a twin tunnel with a cross-passage with the use of PLAXIS V22 FEA software. Despite being well-known as being typically a 3D problem, the outputs are validated by on-site monitoring and the rock-support interaction, and an empirical approach.First, the tunnels vertical displacements are verified with the on-site monitoring separately with the application of the rock-support interaction, then, after excavating the cross-passage, the vertical displacements of the right tunnel are measured by numerical output and compared with the on-site monitoring.Afterwards, vertical displacements of the modelling output of the cross-passage in the simplified model are compared with the vertical displacements of the cross-passage modelled separately. The results are valuable for time saving methodology instead of using a time consuming 3D modelling where the results show a convincing correlation between the on-site monitoring and the results of the simulation.
