This case–control study examined whether endometrial stem cell markers notch-1 and numb are associated with endometriosis by recruiting 51 endometriosis patients and 76 controls, all undergoing transcervical endometrial biopsy and diagnostic laparoscopy in an IVF unit and a tertiary referral center. Using immunostaining, the authors found that numb expression in the luminal epithelium of eutopic endometrium was higher in endometriosis patients than in controls (20.5% vs 16.5%, P=0.033), and that numb-positive single stromal cells were less frequent in endometrioma patients compared with other endometriosis forms. They also reported that notch-1 expression in endometrial glands was higher in patients with deep infiltrating endometriosis than in controls (39.1% vs 21.8%, P=0.045). The paper’s limitation is that it is observational and evaluates associations rather than establishing causality.
