Here, we use a probabilistic approach to explore its growth and therefore its contribution to climate change mitigation by 2050. We find that, based on its characteristics alone, DAC may only reach the megaton-scale by mid-century. However, with targeted policy support - especially to increase near-term capacity – a climate-relevant gigaton-scale could still be reached.
