Diagnoseverzögerung bei Endometriose in den Niederlanden: Eine Wechselwirkung zwischen Patient, Hausarzt und Gynäkologe
This study found that the average diagnostic delay for endometriosis in the Netherlands was 13.9 years, with significant contributions from patient, general practitioner, and gynecologist factors, highlighting areas for improvement in diagnosis.

The study investigated factors contributing to diagnostic delay in endometriosis and quantified the relative contributions of patients, general practitioners, and gynecologists in the Netherlands. Using an online questionnaire, 320 women diagnosed with endometriosis reported a mean diagnostic delay of 13.9 years; the authors estimated a patient delay of 7.2 years, GP delay of 3.8 years, and gynecologist delay of 2.2 years, finding a significant correlation between patient and GP delay (longer patient delay associated with shorter GP delay, and vice versa). At the first GP consultation, only 35% of patients underwent a physical examination, and those who did had a shorter GP delay (2.4 vs 5.4 years), while GP-delay differences were also reported across specific first-visit actions such as lifestyle recommendations, pain medication, hormonal medication, and referral patterns. Imaging at the first gynecologic visit was associated with a shorter gynecologist delay (1.4 vs 2.6 years), and the paper’s main limitation is that results rely on retrospective self-report. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it analyzes diagnostic delay contributions across patients, general practitioners, and gynecologists in the Netherlands.
