The Interpersonal Effects of Endometriosis

other OA: green CC0

Abstract

Endometriosis is a chronic, inflammatory condition commonly connected with abdominal pain, fertility complications and fatigue. Endometriosis is a severely under-researched condition including its treatment and potential cures, but significantly regarding the effects of the condition on the sufferer. In this thesis I analyse the effects of endometriosis on interpersonal relationships, and the underlying sociocultural factors that contribute to lived experience of having endometriosis. To develop my analysis, I draw from both the available anthropological and medical literature on endometriosis and my interviews of ten participants with endometriosis. My research findings confirm that having and living with endometriosis has profound effects on interpersonal relationships. These include relationships with romantic/sexual partners, family members, friends, medical professionals and co-workers. While the impact of endometriosis on these social relationships is related to social preconceptions and taboos that create a stigma around endometriosis, I also show, as confirmed by my participants, that there is a slow sociocultural shift towards a more positive attitude regarding endometriosis and the sufferers of endometriosis.
