Abstract

In this article, a proposal is made for a more consistent definition of active elements, mechanisms of action, and outcomes, in response to the various applications of terminology regarding mechanisms of change in the field of creative arts therapies practice, research, and education. Additionally, we clarify the relationships between these concepts through a visual representation and examples drawn from research and practice.Qualitative research plays a crucial role in identifying potential mechanisms and active elements, while quantitative research can subsequently validate and objectify them. This enables arts therapists to substantiate their therapies with evidence-based insights, thereby enhancing the effectiveness and focus of arts therapies.
