Efficacy and Safety of Middle Meningeal Artery Embolization for Patients with Chronic Subdural Hematoma: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated whether middle meningeal artery (MMA) embolization, compared with conventional treatment alone, improves outcomes for patients with chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), using data from 13 studies (4 randomized clinical trials and 9 observational studies) totaling 2960 participants. Pooled results showed MMA embolization reduced the risk of CSDH recurrence by 60% (RR=0.40, 95% CI 0.25–0.63) with no clear increase in major complications (RR=0.82, 95% CI 0.54–1.25) or mortality (RR=0.90, 95% CI 0.54–1.51), and subgroup analyses by study type showed similar direction effects. A key limitation is that the evidence base included observational studies and reported heterogeneity (I2=50% for recurrence), which can affect confidence in effect estimates.
