Typification of the name Cirsium phulchokiense Kitam. (Asteraceae) Abstract The name Cirsium phulchokiense is here lectotypified amongst the syntypes. A specimen at TI is designated as its lectotype, and others as isolectotypes, based on the rules of the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants. Keywords: Cirsium , ICN, isolectotypes, lectotype, Nepal Introduction During taxonomic studies of the genus Cirsium Mill. in Nepal, an untypified name, Cirsium phulchokiense Kitam., was encountered. Siro Kitamura described C. phulchokiense under the title “New Cirsia from Nepal”; however, he only mentioned the specimen from “Nepal, Phulchoki, south of Kathmandu, 1500 m. alt. (6 Sept. 1972 H. KANAI Ti)” as its type in the protologue (Kitamura 1974). However, there are three specimens with the same information labeled in the herbarium sheet in the TI. The holotype was not designated by Kitamura for this species, nor was the lectotype designated by any authors for this species. Therefore, a lectotype has been designated for C. phulchokiense in this study. Materials and methods This research is based on the study of relevant literature on the name of C. phulchokiense (Shrestha et al. 2022, Rajbhandari et al. 2024), including the protologue of C. phulchokiense (Kitamura 1974) and the family Compositae in “ An enumeration of the flowering plants of Nepal ” by Kitamura & Gould (1982). Besides, the herbaria of BM, KATH, E, and TI were accessed for checking the possible type specimens. The typification was done following the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN; Turland et al. 2018). Typification of the name Cirsium phulchokiense Kitam., Acta Phytotax. Geobot. 26: 16 (1974). Type : Nepal. Bagmati Province: Lalitpur District, south of Kathmandu, Phulchoki, 2200 m a.s.l.-1500 m a.s.l., 6 Sept. 1972, H. Kanai 852274 (lectotype designated here: TI 00010991!; isolectotypes BM000521863!, E00394643!, TI 00010992!, TI 10004714!) (Fig. 1). not-yet-known not-yet-known not-yet-known unknown Notes on typification In the protologue, Kitamura (1974) mentioned the specimen collected at 1500 m from Phulchoki, south of Kathmandu, central Nepal, by H. Kanai on 6 Sept. 1972, and deposited at TI as the type of C. phulchokiense . He did not designate the holotype. However, Shrestha et al . (2022) and Rajbhandari et al . (2024) have erroneously and non-explicitly designated Kanai 722165 (TI 00010991) deposited at TI as the holotype. A registration number of 722165 has been assigned to the C. phulchokiense specimen with barcode number TI 00010991 at TI. During this study, five specimens having a label description matching with that of the type description mentioned in the protologue were found at different herbaria. Amongst them, three specimens are deposited in the TI and one each in the BM and E. On the herbarium label, the elevation was mentioned as 2200 m-1500 m, but on the short annotation attached with the herbarium sheet, it was mentioned as 1500 m. The collection number was not mentioned in the protologue; however, it is mentioned as 852274 in both the herbarium labels and the annotation attached with the specimens. Interestingly, all five specimens have annotations by Kitamura, suggesting he has observed those specimens. But as only three specimens are deposited at TI, therefore, the most complete specimen showing the diagnostic characters of the species amongst the three was chosen as the lectotype of C. phulchokiense according to the rules of ICN (Turland et al. 2018). Conclusion The Cirsium phulchokiense specimen deposited at TI with barcode TI 00010991 is the lectotype of the name C. phulchokiense.
