Abstract

Background: The incidence of dysmenorrhea is quite high worldwide. According to WHO’s data, on the average incidence of dysmenorrhea in young women is 16,8 – 81%. The impact of untreated primary dysmenorrhea is disruption of activity, retrograde menstruation, infertility, endometriosis, rupture ectopic pregnancy, and cyst. The purpose of this research is to find out the relationship between stress and primary dysmenorrhea. Methods: This study used a cross sectional study design. The sample of this research are the S-1 female students at the faculty of Public Health, Sriwijaya University’s of class 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 chosen based on simple random sampling method. Result : That there are two variables related to primary dysmenorrhea’s incidence is stress (p-value=0,015) and exercise (p-value=0,032). There are no relation of nutritional status (p-value=0,960), menarche age (p-value=0,593), duration of menstruation (p-value=0,274), amount of sleep time (p-value=0,504), and menstruation cycle (p-value=0,323) to primary dysmenorrhea’s incidence. Stres risk 2,717 higher occuring to primary dysmenorrhea’s compared with non stres female students, where exercise and duration of menstruation are confounding relationship between stress and incidence of primary dysmenorrhea Conclusion: Stress is related to primary dysmenorrhea’s incidence after controlled by exercise and duration of menstruation. Students are expected to be able to avoid or control stress by acting and positive mindset, learning to accept what it is, expressing feelings that become a burden of the mind, doing a favorite hobby, doing meditation, confident and not low self and doing exercise 3-5 times a week or for 30 minutes in one exercise.
