When the psychedelic state’s over: limited evidence for persistent neurophysiological changes in naturalistic psychedelic users
This study examined whether repeated, long-term naturalistic psychedelic use is associated with persistent neurophysiological differences during abstinence by recording resting-state EEG from 57 psychedelic users (abstinent ≥30 days) and 49 matched non-users at two sites. Using analyses of oscillatory power, signal complexity, and source-localized effective connectivity across five frequency bands and three large-scale brain networks (Default Mode, Salience, Central Executive), the authors applied linear mixed-effects models and a rank-based approach for connectivity. The results were mostly null: there were no significant between-group differences in oscillatory power, effective connectivity showed no differences surviving statistical correction, and complexity differed only in the eyes-open condition in a direction opposite to the authors’ hypothesis, with only a few small exploratory effects reported.
