This review examines the role of neutrophils in the immune microenvironment of endometriosis, integrating evidence from patient studies, cellular and molecular research, and animal models. It discusses neutrophil recruitment, activation, cytokine and angiogenic-factor production, extracellular trap formation, interactions with macrophages, lymphocytes, and stromal cells, and potential use of neutrophil-related pathways for diagnosis or therapy. As a limitation, the conclusions are based on heterogeneous published evidence, including studies with differing experimental systems, and the paper does not itself present a new clinical cohort or experimental dataset. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — the contribution of neutrophils to its systemic and pelvic immune microenvironments and lesion progression.

Abstract

Endometriosis (EMs) is a common systemic estrogen-dependent chronic inflammatory disease in gynaecology. Available evidence indicates that immune factors exert extremely important functions in the pathogenesis of EMs. As a key cell group in the immune environment, neutrophils have been found to be implicated in EMs progression in various studies. In this paper, the function and mechanism of neutrophils in the immune microenvironment of EMs are summarized, providing new research ideas for the etiology and pathogenesis of EMs.
