Seismic performance evaluation of a tall building with dual lateral system consisting of moment frames and Tuned Mass Dampers

Abstract

This study is devoted to evaluate the seismic performance of a 30-story steel special moment frame equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) using six different strategies, including conventional TMD, multi TMD and high-mass-ratio TMDs. The primary steel moment frame was designed according to the latest code provisions such that only the strength of the elements was satisfied, as the drift limits were going to be controlled using the TMDs. The building models were subjected to a set of 11 far-field ground motions scaled to the DBE level. The seismic responses of the models, including the maximum inter-story drifts, the maximum story displacements, the maximum story accelerations and the maximum base shears were compared to clarify the efficacy of each TMD retrofitting method. The results indicated that structural responses were decreased as the mass ratio of TMDs was increased. The effect of high-mass ratio TMDs to reduce the lateral drifts was more than the conventional TMDs, whereas controlling the displacements at the level of isolation could be challenging. Moreover, multi TMDs seemed to be an efficient solution to combat the detrimental seismic effects compared to the rest of the TMD types used in this study.
