A method using multi-direction temporary Kapandji pinning technique and volar locking plate fixation for type C of distal radius fractures

Abstract

Abstract Purpose It may be difficult to achieve satisfactory and maintenance of good reduction in partially or completely displaced intra-articular fracture of the type C distal radius fractures. The purpose of this study is to retrospect and summarize a method using multi-direction temporary Kapandji pinning technique and volar locking plate fixation for type C of distal radius fractures. Method 15 patients with type C of distal radius fractures who underwent an operation between January 2024 and April 2024 in this study. The operation involved multi-direction temporary Kapandji pinning technique followed by stable osteosynthesis using a locked plate system. We present a multi-direction temporary Kapandji pinning technique to fixation followed by rigid fixation with distal radial volar locking compression plate. After 2–3 months of follow-up, evaluated the treatment effect of wrist function by the modified Mayo wrist scoring system. Results According to the modified Mayo wrist scoring (MMWS) system, the functional assessment revealed good to excellent results in most cases. Conclusion This reduction technique was not only easy to perform but also reproducible. Satisfactory reduction alignment was achieved with minimal leverage force. Rigid and stable fixation is achieved with the volar locked plate system.
