The Intense World Theory of Autism: Implications for Episodic and Semantic Memory in Autistic Individuals

Abstract
This article discusses the memory function in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs), examined through the lens of the Intense World Theory (IWT). Prior studies on declarative memory in autistic individuals indicate deficits in episodic memory, with relatively intact semantic memory. However, the IWT suggests that the observed atypical declarative memory in autistic individuals may result from hyper-reactive, rather than hypo-reactive, neural circuits as traditionally assumed. The article advocates for a nuanced approach in understanding the complexities surrounding ASDs, taking into account the hyper-functionality posited by the theory. Portraying ASD as a product of hyper-active neural systems rather than diminished capacities, the article motivates a rethinking of the approach towards studying memory in ASD, potentially leading to a paradigm shift in both research methodologies and treatment strategies.
