The prepared samples are characterized by techniques such as TGA-DSC, XRD, FE-SEM, FTIR, XPS, UV-DRS and Photoluminescence spectra. Using TGA-DTA, the optimal calcination and sintering temperatures are found to be \(\:{750}^{\:0}\text{C}\) and \(\:{850\:}^{0}\text{C}\) , respectively. Structural characterization using XRD shows distorted rhombohedral structure with particle size in 6–13 nm range. The surface morphology and elemental composition present in the samples are analyzed using SEM and EDX techniques respectively. The molecular bonding characteristics are studied by FTIR spectroscopy. The band gap energy determined using UV-Vis spectra range between 2.4 eV and 2.8 eV. The electron hole recombination is studied using photoluminescence spectra and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to determine the valence state of La and Ni in the pure and doped samples. The result shows the influence of dopants in modifying the electronic structure.
