Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic disease affecting women of reproductive age that manifests with dysmenorrhea, dyspareunia and fertility disorders. Diagnosis is based on clinical and ultrasound examination, whereas in some of the cases, laparoscopic visualization and biopsy of the lesion are required. Current treatment options include pharmacotherapy, surgery, and combined therapy. Infertility associated with endometriosis is treated with assisted reproduction methods. Pharmacotherapy refers to hormones, such as gestagens, oral hormonal contraception, and gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs, which have suppressive but not curative effects. Surgical treatment is performed in cases of medication refractory disease and extensive lesions. In order to preserve the patient's reproductive ability, laparoscopic approach is used most often. There are divided opinions about medicamentous or surgical treatment, but an importance of maintaining the integrity of the pelvic peritoneum and preserving ovarian reserves, stays mutual.
