The role of high intensity focused ultrasound in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain

Objective:To investigate the clinical effect of high intensity focused ultrasound(HIFU) in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain(CPP).Methods:30 patients with CPP were exposed to the heat radiaton focused at the presacral nerve using HIFU,and a extra radiation at the focus of the patients with adenomyoma of uterus,then follow-up study of 1～18 months after the treatment was carried out.Results:The pain were mostly relieved 12 months latter,Type-B ultrasound revealed that the location of focus with a enhanced echo,the flow disappeared,and the size of tumor decreased about 3 cm.Some symptoms such as light hypogastralgia,frequent micturition and constipation were observed in 3 patients,but they were disappeared in 1 month,and no other obvious side reaction were shown.Conclusion:HIFU treatment is non-invasive and without obvious side effects,which is a safe and effective treatment for CPP.
