Spatial and temporal coordination of signaling pathways in tissue differentiation: developmental atlas of protein expression during zebra finch beak maturation
This study created an atlas of protein expression to examine how major signaling pathways coordinate spatially and temporally during zebra finch beak morphogenesis across embryonic stages HH29–42. Using cellular and histological localization, the authors assessed spatiotemporal coexpression patterns of β-catenin, Bmp4, CaM, Dkk3, Fgf8, Ihh, Tgfβ2, and Wnt4, finding broad overlapping expression in early stages (HH29–32) that becomes progressively compartmentalized by HH36, with tissue-specific distributions in boundary versus core regions of chondrogenic and osteogenic domains at later stages. The authors note a major caveat that several proteins exhibited unexpected subcellular localization and regulatory complexity that is not captured by prior transcript-level maps.
