Abstract

SummaryA patient who had developed endometrial cystic hyperplasia whilst receiving oestrogen therapy for climacteric symptoms was treated with a progestagen for two 3-week courses separated by I week. Scanning electron microscopy of the cystic hyperplasia showed regular columnar cells. Over one-third of these cells were covered by cilia and the remainder by long, branching microvilli. The first course of progestagen caused a progressive decrease in the number of cilia and shortening and fusing of the microvilli, until a flat ‘contraceptive pill-like’ atrophic endometrium was seen. After the second course of progestagen an atrophic endometrium was seen with large pleomorphic cells of unknown significance
