Abstract

Advisor Managed Accounts (AMAs) represent a significant evolution in defined contribution retirement plan offerings, providing participants with personalized investment management that goes far beyond traditional target-date funds. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the managed account ecosystem, examining the technological platforms that power these services, the regulatory framework governing Qualified Default Investment Alternatives (QDIAs), and the integration mechanisms that enable holistic retirement planning. We explore the role of industry leaders such as Morningstar Retirement Manager in delivering personalized advice, analyze the data integration requirements for participant-level customization, and examine emerging trends including hybrid QDIA structures, non-core investment options, and other assets aggregation. The paper also addresses critical operational considerations including participant-level fee calculations, opt-in/opt-out enrollment workflows, and the fiduciary implications for plan sponsors. Through this comprehensive examination, we provide practitioners and researchers with a thorough understanding of the current state and future trajectory of advisor managed accounts in the retirement industry.
