Over the past few decades, the incidence of obesity has sharply risen, which has resulted in an increase in related health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart illnesses, and certain malignancies. Objective examines demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors affecting obesity among medical professionals, analyses medical field data to identify obesity reasons and provide realistic weight control and obesity prevention strategies. Method January–June 2024 cross sectional survey of 200 Babylon physicians. Stratified random selection ensured a balanced mix of demographic and socioeconomic traits throughout data collection. Results Of the physician replies, most were female (53%), urbanites (96%), aged 36–45 (43%), and 46–55 (32%), With 78% inactivity, most responders—medical (59.5%)—had private clinics (72%) and Age, private employment, and weight satisfaction were linked to BMI; 74% of respondents were overweight or obese. Though they tried to lose weight, 56.5% of them were dissatisfied with it. Conclusion Doctors are becoming overweight and obese, and BMI is closely connected with age, private work, and weight satisfaction. Doctors are often unhappy with their weight, suggesting weight control concerns. Low physical activity may be linked to work overload. Exercise and lifestyle improvements for doctors are desperately needed. Patient care providers' health will improve by addressing these challenges. Demographic Lifestyle Factors BMI Weight Satisfaction Medical Population Babylon province Figures Figure 1 Figure 2 Introduction Rising worldwide health issue obesity is typified by an excessive body fat buildup endangering health. Over the past few decades, the incidence of obesity has sharply risen, which has resulted in an increase in related health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart illnesses, and certain malignancies [ 1 ]. Developing good preventive and intervention plans depends on an awareness of the demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle elements of obesity. Many research has shown how demographic elements like age, gender, and residence influence obesity rates. Research shows, for example, that obesity prevalence differs depending on age; middle-aged adults often show greater rates than younger people [ 2 ]. Furthermore, important are gender variations; some research indicate that women are more prone than males to be obese because of different biological, behavioral, and social reasons [ 3 ]. Furthermore, proven to influence obesity rates is residence, especially in urban rather than rural locations; urban inhabitants frequently have more obesity prevalence because of lifestyle variations [ 4 ]. Important predictors of obesity are also lifestyle choices like physical exercise and eating patterns. Most people agree that keeping a good weight and avoiding obesity depend mostly on regular physical exercise [ 5 ]. Still, many people have a lot of inactive habits and lack of exercise, which helps to explain the growing obesity rates [6). Dietary habits aggravate the obesity pandemic even more by adding low-nutrient items with high calorie count [ 7 ]. Obesity rates can be influenced by the medical profession itself, especially among medical personnel who sometimes work long hours and may suffer from great degrees of stress. Studies have revealed that even knowing healthy behaviors, healthcare professionals might not always follow them, which increases the obesity rates in this group [ 8 ]. Furthermore, the existence of chronic conditions could compromise a person's capacity to properly control their weight. Higher obesity rates are frequently linked to chronic diseases such diabetes and hypertension, which fuels a circle of health issues [ 9 ]. Apart from these elements, present obesity level is much influenced by past efforts to control weight. Those who have tried to reduce weight in the past are frequently more mindful of their weight situation and could act in more health-conscious manner [ 10 ]. The effectiveness of these initiatives differs, though; many people find it difficult to keep weight down over time, which causes a return into obesity [ 11 ]. The aim of study is to exploring the spread of obesity among medical field individuals by means of several demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle aspects. We aim to find important factors of obesity by means of data analysis from medical field individuals and offer understanding of sensible approaches for weight control and obesity prevention. Method Cross sectional study of 200 physicians worked in Babylon health directorate, in Babylon province, the data collected from January 2024 to June 2024. The data they were chosen using a stratified random selection technique to guarantee a fair mix of several demographic and socioeconomic traits, comprised the time of data collecting. Study Population and Sampling The survey covered adult patients eighteen years of age and above who visited the medical Centre throughout the course of business. The study was not included of patients with severe concomitant diseases that could independently influence their body weight, including advanced malignancies or chronic renal failure. To guarantee that the sample represented the variety in age, gender, and residence (urban versus rural) of the population, stratified random sampling was applied. Data Collection Trained research assistants conducted face-to–face interviews carrying a standardized questionnaire to gather data. Sections on demographic information (age, gender, residency), socioeconomic status (employment, education level), medical history (chronic diseases, past treatments), lifestyle factors (exercise habits, dietary patterns), and weight management practices (previous attempts to lose weight, weight satisfaction) comprised the questionnaire. Anthropometric Measurements The subjects' Body Mass Index (BMI) was ascertained via anthropometric assessments. Weight was gauged on a calibrated digital scale; height was measured using a audiometer. We computed BMI as weight in kg divided by height in meters squared (kg/m²). Based on World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, participants were classified as normal weight (BMI < 25), overweight (BMI 25-29.9), and obese (BMI ≥ 30) [ 12 ]. Statistical Analysis Using the statistical package for the social sciences (SPSS), version 25, data were input and examined. The demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle characteristics of the research group were compiled using descriptive statistics—including frequencies and percentages—that capture Chi-square tests were used to investigate the relationships between BMI categories and many research factors including age, gender, residence, medical profession, presence of chronic illnesses, and exercise practices and a p-value of less than 0.05 was regarded statistically significant. Ethical Considerations The medical center's Institutional Review Board (IRB) authorized the trial. Before being registered for the research, each participant gave written informed permission. To guarantee privacy, data were anonymized before to analysis and participant information was rigorously kept under confidentially. Our results show that among the doctors, obesity and overweight are somewhat common; 43% of those aged 36–45 years and 32% of those aged 46–55 years. This group of people fits past research showing middle-aged adults had greater obesity risk [ 13 , 14 ]. 53% of the respondents in our survey were female, which is in line with recent studies suggesting a greater frequency of obesity among female healthcare workers compared to their male colleagues [ 15 ]. Given the greater availability of medical facilities and employment in cities, most of the doctors (96%), in our research lived in metropolitan regions. This urban predominance is consistent with results of previous research stressing urbanisation as a component causing higher obesity prevalence by means of lifestyle changes and lower physical activity [ 16 ]. Furthermore, whilst 40.5% of the respondents worked in the medical profession, 59.5% in the surgical one. This distribution can represent the effort and stress levels connected with various medical disciplines, which might affect obesity risk and lifestyle decisions [ 17 ]. According to our survey, 72% of the doctors maintained a private clinic and 78% claimed not to regularly exercise. Given the well-founded advantages of exercise in weight control and general health [ 18 ], this lack of physical activity is alarming. Similar results were recorded by Helmerhorst HJ et al., who discovered that rigorous work schedules cause healthcare workers to commonly neglect advised physical activity recommendations [ 19 ]. Fascinatingly, 18.5% of the participants received therapy for chronic illnesses and 69% had past attempts at weight loss. Notwithstanding these efforts, a large number (56.5%) said they lacked time to exercise because of their hectic and demanding job. This emphasizes the importance of workplace interventions to encourage physical exercise and assist weight control among medical practitioners. The great frequency of weight loss attempts combined with poor satisfaction imply that present efforts could not be sustainable or successful over long terms. When we cross our findings with those of other research, we see both parallels and contrasts. For example, a research by Mudnić Ž et al. found comparable results on the high obesity incidence among medical professionals, especially those with sedentary employment positions [ 20 ]. Unlike our study, they discovered a more equal mix between men and women, indicating that regional and population-based variations in gender-related obesity trends [ 21 ]. Another crucial component of our research is the correlation between BMI and other variables. Between BMI and age, private work, and weight satisfaction we observed notable correlations. Obese or overweight doctors ranged from 46 to 55 years old and from those with private employment. These results conform to earlier studies by Phelan et al., who found that obesity is significantly predicted by occupational stress and older age [ 22 ]. The important correlation between BMI and weight satisfaction emphasizes the psychological influence of obesity and the need of addressing body image concerns in weight control programmers [ 23 ]. We did not, however, uncover any appreciable relationships between BMI, gender, residency, or medical field. This runs counter to certain research finding residence and gender as major determinants of obesity prevalence [ 24 , 25 ]. The somewhat homogeneous sample in our study, mostly consisting of urban people and a balanced gender distribution, which may have lessened the variability in these elements, might be one possible cause of this mismatch. Our survey also revealed that 84.6% of obese and overweight doctors worked alone and that 81.8% did not exercise. These results are in line with research suggesting that long working hours and high job stress in private practice might support bad lifestyle choices and higher obesity risk [ 26 ]. Furthermore, 90.4% of individuals trying to reduce weight were obese or overweight, suggesting a continuous struggle with weight control notwithstanding constant attempts. At last, we discovered a clear correlation between weight satisfaction and BMI. While those with greater BMI were not content with their weight, physicians with normal BMI were more likely to be so. This result is consistent with other studies showing that people who are overweight or obese often experience weight discontent and may suffer mentally and lose drive to keep good habits [ 27 ]. Conclusion The study draws attention to a worrying frequency of overweight and obesity among doctors and shows strong correlations between BMI and variables like age, private job, and weight satisfaction. Many doctors remain unhappy with their weight, despite a great frequency of weight loss attempts, suggesting difficulties in efficient weight control. There is a general lack of physical activity, perhaps related to hectic job schedules. Interventions encouraging physical exercise and sensible lifestyle modifications catered to the particular responsibilities of doctors' employment are desperately required. Dealing with these elements will help the medical personnel who are so important for patient care to be generally healthier and better. Over the past few decades, the incidence of obesity has sharply risen, which has resulted in an increase in related health issues like type 2 diabetes, heart illnesses, and certain malignancies [1]. Developing good preventive and intervention plans depends on an awareness of the demographic, socioeconomic, and lifestyle elements of obesity. Many research has shown how demographic elements like age, gender, and residence influence obesity rates. Research shows, for example, that obesity prevalence differs depending on age; middle-aged adults often show greater rates than younger people [2]. Furthermore, important are gender variations; some research indicate that women are more prone than males to be obese because of different biological, behavioral, and social reasons [3]. Furthermore, proven to influence obesity rates is residence, especially in urban rather than rural locations; urban inhabitants frequently have more obesity prevalence because of lifestyle variations [4]. Important predictors of obesity are also lifestyle choices like physical exercise and eating patterns. Most people agree that keeping a good weight and avoiding obesity depend mostly on regular physical exercise [5]. Still, many people have a lot of inactive habits and lack of exercise, which helps to explain the growing obesity rates [6). Dietary habits aggravate the obesity pandemic even more by adding low-nutrient items with high calorie count [7]. Obesity rates can be influenced by the medical profession itself, especially among medical personnel who sometimes work long hours and may suffer from great degrees of stress. Studies have revealed that even knowing healthy behaviors, healthcare professionals might not always follow them, which increases the obesity rates in this group [8]. Furthermore, the existence of chronic conditions could compromise a person's capacity to properly control their weight. Higher obesity rates are frequently linked to chronic diseases such diabetes and hypertension, which fuels a circle of health issues [9]. Apart from these elements, present obesity level is much influenced by past efforts to control weight. Those who have tried to reduce weight in the past are frequently more mindful of their weight situation and could act in more health-conscious manner [10]. The effectiveness of these initiatives differs, though; many people find it difficult to keep weight down over time, which causes a return into obesity [11].

Method

Cross sectional study of 200 physicians worked in Babylon health directorate, in Babylon province, the data collected from January 2024 to June 2024. demographic and lifestyle elements affecting obesity among doctors. Our results show that among the doctors, obesity and overweight are somewhat common; 43% of those aged 36–45 years and 32% of those aged 46–55 years. This group of people fits past research showing middle-aged adults had greater obesity risk [13, 14]. 53% of the respondents in our survey were female, which is in line with recent studies suggesting a greater frequency of obesity among female healthcare workers compared to their male colleagues [15]. Given the greater availability of medical facilities and employment in cities, most of the doctors (96%), in our research lived in metropolitan regions. This urban predominance is consistent with results of previous research stressing urbanisation as a component causing higher obesity prevalence by means of lifestyle changes and lower physical activity [16]. Furthermore, whilst 40.5% of the respondents worked in the medical profession, 59.5% in the surgical one. This distribution can represent the effort and stress levels connected with various medical disciplines, which might affect obesity risk and lifestyle decisions [17]. According to our survey, 72% of the doctors maintained a private clinic and 78% claimed not to regularly exercise. Given the well-founded advantages of exercise in weight control and general health [18], this lack of physical activity is alarming. Similar results were recorded by Helmerhorst HJ et al., who discovered that rigorous work schedules cause healthcare workers to commonly neglect advised physical activity recommendations [19]. For example, a research by Mudnić Ž et al. found comparable results on the high obesity incidence among medical professionals, especially those with sedentary employment positions [20]. Unlike our study, they discovered a more equal mix between men and women, indicating that regional and population-based variations in gender-related obesity trends [21]. Another crucial component of our research is the correlation between BMI and other variables. Between BMI and age, private work, and weight satisfaction we observed notable correlations. Obese or overweight doctors ranged from 46 to 55 years old and from those with private employment. These results conform to earlier studies by Phelan et al., who found that obesity is significantly predicted by occupational stress and older age [22]. The important correlation between BMI and weight satisfaction emphasizes the psychological influence of obesity and the need of addressing body image concerns in weight control programmers [23]. We did not, however, uncover any appreciable relationships between BMI, gender, residency, or medical field. This runs counter to certain research finding residence and gender as major determinants of obesity prevalence [24, 25]. These results are in line with research suggesting that long working hours and high job stress in private practice might support bad lifestyle choices and higher obesity risk [26]. This result is consistent with other studies showing that people who are overweight or obese often experience weight discontent and may suffer mentally and lose drive to keep good habits [27].

Conclusion

The study draws attention to a worrying frequency of overweight and obesity among doctors and shows strong correlations between BMI and variables like age, private job, and weight satisfaction.

Declarations

All authors contributed to the study conception and design.
