Abstract

Abstract This study develops a framework for designing a carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) supply chain network with economic and environmental concerns. The target is to establish the best CCUS configuration pathways while considering the real geographic locations of CO2 sources, utilization/storage sinks, and various CO2-based products. The proposed problem is a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem where two objectives (costs and environmental impacts) are balanced. A two-dimensional Pareto front is constructed by implementing the ε-constraint method. The proposed framework is employed to address actual case research based on Germany in order to illustrate the model's capability. The results suggest that valuable insights achieved from the model can be applied to other countries at different scales (a state, region, nation level) and help decision-makers elect more sustainable options in the design of CCUS infrastructure.
