Why do vision researchers model data based on assumptions they know to be false?

Abstract
For decades, vision science practitioners at every level have exhibited a marked indifference to fact and reason. Demonstrably false or logically paradoxical claims are passed on as traditions which practitioners often acknowledge as dubious but nonetheless adopt for the purpose of “modelling data.” I illustrate and question the scientific value of this kind of practice.
