Abstract

Abstract This article aims to highlight the low participation of women in the labor market during periods of economic recovery. Using the Hodrick-Prescott (HP) filter, we estimated the output gap with an extended nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model applied to annual data from 1990 to 2022. The results show that periods of economic recovery are not conducive to women entering the labor market. Indeed, the regressions show that a 1% increase in economic recovery is associated with a 0.04% increase in the female labor force participation rate. These results show that economic growth is largely driven by investment in infrastructure (construction and public works) and in the mining and oil sectors, where women are generally underrepresented.
