The paper evaluated functional aspects in 118 patients with deep intestinal endometriosis, using anorectal manometry and 3D anorectal ultrasonography in a specialized center. Patients were retrospectively divided by the degree of lesion infiltration into the rectal wall, and those with foci invading the muscularis propria reported more clinical symptoms and showed a higher incidence of anismus on manometry. Although normal-range mean manometric pressures were observed regardless of infiltration degree, the authors concluded that deep intestinal endometriosis alone is not necessarily causative of anorectal dysfunction, and that persistent clinical symptoms without adequate long-term treatment may contribute. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — it specifically analyzes functional anorectal findings in deep intestinal endometriosis with rectal wall infiltration.
