Abstract
SummarySummaryThe hypothesis that obesity is a risk factor for the development of endometriosis was investigated. The Quetelet or obesity index, weight (kg)/height (m2), was calculated for 55 infertile patients who had endometriosis confirmed at laparoscopy. Any patient with an obesity index of 25 kg/m2 or more was considered to be obese. For controls two groups were studied: 43 infertile patients with tubal disease and 61 infertile patients with normal pelvic findings. The women were matched for age, race, parity and presenting complaint. No association was found between endometriosis and obesity. Furthermore, among the patients with endometriosis, no association was seen between the obesity index and the severity of the disease. These results do not support the hypothesis that obesity is a risk factor for the development of endometriosis.
