Abstract
The aim of this study was to test the reproducibility of elastography in the diagnosis of uterine abnormalities. We performed a prospective case control study with MRI as a reference test. Twenty premenopausal woman with the diagnosis intrauterine fibroids or adenomyosis were included. Volunteers with no gynecological history functioned as a control group. A standardised method of elastographic scanning was used in all patients. Observers were asked for their suspected diagnosis. Dimensions of the uterus, endometrium and fibroids (if present) were measured. The agreement between elastography and MRI for the diagnosis of fibroids and adenomyosis was perfect (kappa 0.9). The agreement between observers for the diagnosis of fibroids and adenomyosis was good (kappa 0.69 and 0.60). The intra-class correlation was very good for the uterus volume (ICC 0.82 and 0.91 for observer 1 and 2) and fibroid volume (ICC 0.90 and 0.83 for observer 1 and 2). Interobserver agreement with regard to uterus and fibroid volume was perfect for measuring uterus volume (ICC 0.96) and fibroid volume (ICC 0.92).
