Abstract

Accurate appreciation of the benefits and limitations of pelvic US for the evaluation of gynecologic causes of acute female pelvic pain is extremely important when providing critical imaging care. Familiarity with pelvic US techniques and their inherent shortcomings, along with an understanding of the appropriate use of corollary CT and/or MR imaging studies, often enables radiologists to diagnose the cause of acute female pelvic pain and/or provide a more succinct differential diagnosis to aid in the management of this symptom. In addition, proper use of US in the identification of the cause of acute pelvic pain can help increase the cost-effectiveness of diagnostic imaging, while minimizing the radiation risk and optimizing patient care.
