Abstract
Objective: To analyze, through an integrative review, the current scientific evidence regarding the association between endometriosis and periodontal disease. Methodology: The search was conducted in 2026 using PubMed and Web of Science databases, with descriptors related to endometriosis and periodontal disease. A total of 139 studies were identified (PubMed = 27; Web of Science = 25; Scopus = 87). After title and abstract screening, 24articles were selected for full-text analysis. Following eligibility criteria and duplicate removal, 5 studies were included in the final sample. Results: The included studies demonstrated that women with endometriosis present a higher prevalence and severity of periodontal disease, including increased gingival bleeding, presence of periodontitis, and worse clinical parameters. Observational evidence indicated a significant association between the conditions, while analytical studies suggested a possible causal relationship, particularly in specific subtypes of endometriosis. Additionally, alterations in the oral microbiome were identified, especially involving periodontopathogenic microorganisms, as well as increased levels of shared inflammatory mediators, supporting the hypothesis of systemic immune dysregulation. Conclusion: There is evidence of an association between endometriosis and periodontal disease, possibly mediated by shared inflammatory and immunological mechanisms, highlighting the importance of a multidisciplinary approach. However, further longitudinal clinical studies with larger samples are needed to clarify the underlying mechanisms and confirm causality.
