Abstract

Psychiatric diagnostic labels are ineffective at best, and authoritarian, racist eugenics at worst. Despite decades of calls for their abolishment and more strength-based understandings of neurodiversity, no compelling alternatives yet exist. In this article, we illustrate and differentiate behaviour currently associated with attention disorder labels of ADHD and CDS. Extending our existing spacetime attention framework within process-based therapy theory we model ADHD and CDS-related traits as lower attention retention and selection over multiple tasks and goals. With the assumption spacetime attention fluctuations dictate the direction and duration of relational development, we provide a more nuanced understanding of how attention changes may affect functional, meaningful outcomes across different contexts and success criteria. As examples, attention moving away from uncomfortable internal experiences (thoughts, feelings, and emotions) may prevent suppression and regain mindful, present moment attention; attention moving internally may help creativity and encourage more meaningful actions. We then provide practical recommendations for assessment and holistic support for clients struggling with inattention within acceptance-based psychology practice.
