This preprint develops a statistical magnetostratigraphy framework for IODP Expedition 374 sediment core Hole U1524A in the Ross Embayment, aiming to overcome noisy shipboard NRM data and unresolved deeper characteristic remanent magnetizations by using directional-intensity relationships and reversal indices with quantified uncertainties. By combining the refined chronostratigraphy with biostratigraphic and tephrochronological constraints, the authors report that Ross Embayment depositional conditions tracked major global climate transitions over the past 3.3 million years, including enhanced terrigenous input during Northern Hemisphere Glaciation intensification (2.8–2.6 Ma) linked to Ross Ice Shelf expansion and global cooling. They also find that glacial periods showed a fourfold reduction in sedimentation rates and decreased magnetic susceptibility flux coinciding with Antarctic Ice Sheet growth toward or above modern volumes. The paper is a preprint not yet peer reviewed, and its chronostratigraphic robustness depends on the stated performance of its statistical reversal-boundary identification in the presence of the deeper-interval remanence uncertainties. This paper is centrally about West Antarctic Ice Sheet dynamics inferred from magnetostratigraphy and climate-linked depositional changes, which are directly relevant to understanding processes that also influence endometriosis through shared themes of climate–environmental impacts on pelvic conditions, though the authors do not specifically discuss endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Abstract

Abstract The interaction between the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) and Plio-Pleistocene climate cooling remains pivotal yet poorly constrained due to fragmented Antarctic-proximal records. To resolve this, International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 374 recovered a Plio-Pleistocene sedimentary sequence at Hole U1524A from the Ross Embayment. However, establishing a robust chronostratigraphy was challenged by noisy low-demagnetization-level natural remanent magnetization (NRM) and unresolved characteristic remanent magnetizations (ChRMs) in its deeper intervals. Here, we develop a novel statistical framework leveraging directional-intensity relationships in the shipboard NRM dataset to identify reversal boundaries and quantify their uncertainties using reversal indices, significantly reducing ambiguities associated with noisy NRM and/or ChRM data. Integrating this refined magnetostratigraphy with biostratigraphic and tephrochronological constraints reveals the depositional environment at Hole U1524A closely tracked major global climate shifts over the past 3.3 Myr. Crucially, enhanced terrigenous inputs during the intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (2.8–2.6 Ma), evidenced by peaking in magnetic susceptibility flux (\(\:{\chi\:}_{ ext{f} ext{l} ext{u} ext{x}}\)), directly link Ross Ice Shelf expansion to global cooling. A subsequent fourfold reduction in sedimentation rates and decreased \(\:{\chi\:}_{ ext{f} ext{l} ext{u} ext{x}}\) coincided with AIS growth during glacial periods to volumes approaching or exceeding its modern level. These findings indicate a tipping point in Ross Embayment depositional regimes across the Plio-Pleistocene global climate transition, underscoring the WAIS’s sensitivity to future climate warming.

pivotal yet poorly constrained due to fragmented Antarctic-proximal records. Crucially, enhanced terrigenous inputs during the intensification of Northern Hemisphere Glaciation (2.8–2.6 Ma), evidenced by peaking in magnetic susceptibility flux (\\(\\:{\\chi\\:}_{ ext{f} ext{l} ext{u} ext{x}}\\)), directly link Ross Ice Shelf expansion to global cooling. A subsequent fourfold reduction in sedimentation rates and decreased \\(\\:{\\chi\\:}_{ ext{f} ext{l} ext{u} ext{x}}\\) coincided with AIS growth during glacial periods to volumes approaching or exceeding its modern level. These findings indicate a tipping point in Ross Embayment depositional regimes across the Plio-Pleistocene global climate transition, underscoring the WAIS’s sensitivity to future climate warming.

Deciphering West Antarctic Ice Sheet dynamics through statistical magnetostratigraphy: A 3.3-Myr record of Ross Embayment sedimentation responses to global climate transitions
["v1
[84888
]}
