Abstract

In the alternative model of personality disorders (AMPD), the criteria for personality disorder diagnosis are bifurcated into the assessment of self and interpersonal function (Criterion A) and the presence of maladaptive personality traits (Criterion B). While the Personality Inventory for the Diagnostic and Statistics Manual, Fifth Edition (PID-5) (R. F. Krueger et al., 2012) enables the assessment of these traits, a remaining challenge to implementing Criterion B is the question of what constitutes the presence of a maladaptive trait. In the present study of over 190,000 Americans, we report descriptive norms of the PID-5 items, and facets, domains, and personality disorder composites for a normative sample, as well as for 14 sub-samples that are grouped by age and gender, and we provide item response parameters for each of the subscales. We also include facet and domain descriptive norms for the 100- and 25-item versions of the PID-5. These data provide resources for researchers and clinicians alike enabling the further study of personality disorders and implementing the AMPD in clinical practice.
