Expression and significance of MMP-2 and VEGF in endometriosis

Objective To investigate the role of matrix metalloproteinase 2(MMP 2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the pathogenesis of endometriosis (EMs).Methods A total of 70 specimens of endometriosis and 30 specimens of the normal controls were evaluated by immunohistologically techique with polyclonal antibody against MMP 2 and VEGF.Results The expression levels of MMP 2 in endometriotic tissues was higher than that in the normal endometrium( P 0.01).Expression of VEGF in ectopic endometrial cells was also higher.Conclusion Matrix metalloproteinase 2 is overexpressed in endometriotic tissues, which can make ectopic endometrial tissues have a greated capacity to invade . There were close relationships between VEGF and endometriosis angiogenesis. MMP 2?VEGF play an important role in the progression of endometriosis.
