This paper reports a single case of endometriosis localized to the Bartholin gland, initially misdiagnosed as a Bartholin gland cyst. The authors describe that the correct diagnosis was established later using the patient’s history and ultrasound findings, after the initial cyst diagnosis. They conclude that Bartholin gland endometriosis should be considered when there is dyspareunia, cyclic vulvar swelling and pain, alongside characteristic ultrasound features. This paper is centrally about endometriosis — specifically endometriosis presenting in the Bartholin gland with premenstrual cyclic swelling and pain.

Abstract

Endometriosis is a pathological condition characterized by the presence of endometrial tissue outside the endometrium. The authors describe a case of endometriosis in the Bartholin gland, which was initially diagnosed as a Bartholin gland cyst. The correct diagnosis was later made on the basis of the patient history and the results of the ultrasound examination. Endometriosis in the Bartholin gland should be considered in the presence of dyspareunia, cyclic swelling and pain at the vulvar level, and characteristic ultrasound findings.
