Immune mediators serum levels are distinctly associated with osteoporosis in male and female patients

Abstract

Introduction: Osteoporosis is a chronic and progressive disease caused by an imbalance in the bone remodeling process. In this process, resorption and formation are performed by osteoclasts and osteoblasts, respectively. This delicate balance is regulated by several hormones and cytokines. Thus, to attain a better understanding of the bone remodeling associated process with osteoporosis in aging subjects, the following mediators were investigated: cytokines, chemokines and metalloproteinase-3 (MMP-3). Patients and Methods: To this end, blood samples were collected from 30 osteoporotic patients, cytokines, chemokines and MMP-3 were measured with the help of ELISA and CBA. Results: Men with osteoporosis had significantly higher levels of MMP-3 and decreased levels of CCL5 than women. Women with osteoporosis had significantly higher levels of IL-33 compared to adult males. Discussion and conclusion: The different immunological factors seem to act differently in osteoporosis evaluated separately in men and women. An increase in MMP-3 and decreased CCL5 may be an important factor in osteoporosis in men, whereas the disease seems to be associated with an increase in IL-33 in women.
